It was all the way back in 2005 that Microsoft introduced the concept of Achievements built into games, with Sony following suit and calling them Trophies. It gives players another way to compete with friends online, and can help to add some longevity to games if you’re prepared to go grind out those tougher challenges. However, the system has remained largely untouched since it first appeared, but that could be about to change.
The word is that Microsoft plans to upgrade the system, enabling your Xbox avatar to level up, earning prestige ranks and new items through gaining achievements, almost turning the avatar/achievement system into an RPG in itself. There’s even talk of loot boxes but it’s not clear whether these will include micro-transactions or simple be earned through play.
So long as the new system doesn’t introduce obtrusive attempts to get players to spend money, we’re all for adding some interest and value to the achievements system that has become rather stale. There’s no confirmation of anything yet, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
